I have been asked this question countless times by fellow startup founders. As a founder myself with a background in finance, I was often able to help them in ways that a consultant or accountant couldn't.

First Foray into Financial Modeling

These requests from founders inspired me to start my previous company, offering financial modeling software for startups.

While I enjoyed helping early-stage companies, the experience also made me realize the importance of building a product that could scale as our clients grew. Frankly, our software wasn’t flexible enough to meet the demands of larger clients, and I hated losing well-paying customers once they passed $10 million or so in revenue.

I eventually sold the company, but the silver lining was meeting my now co-founder Sam.

Sam and I realized we work well together, and have a passion for helping companies use forecasting to make better decisions about their future.

What we needed was a fresh start.

We had learned what architecture to avoid, which customers to focus on, and what level of flexibility and functionality our next product needed. I also realized I shouldn’t shy away from offering fractional CFO services when our customers need something more than software alone.

This led us to start Cloudberry.

We want to build a company that’s here for the long haul, unaffected by market trends or investor pressures. We know the challenges of building a company with little to no outside funding, and understand the tradeoffs between a focus on profitability and growth.
